ABOUT THE BOOK

The book, Sacajawea by Joesph Bruchac (published in 2000) explains the moment of history during the Lewis and Clark expedition of Northwest America during the early 1800s.

Because this novel is based on non-fictional characters and events, and there are not many parts that are fictional, this book helps us to learn about historical figures and events.

The novel is unique because it offers two different perspectives of this event. One perspective is from the male American explorer, William Clark and the other is from a Native American female, Sacajawea. Because two different characters describe the same event, we are able to learn the different views on traditions, cultures, beiiefs, and people.

With two perspectives described in the book, we have a better understanding of different viewpoints in this time of history.
